Adoption FAQS
Do you adopt out of state?
-
While we will always prioritize those adopters within the states of North and South Carolina, we do adopt to families outside the Southeast.
How long does your adoption process take?
-
We try to thoroughly vet each potential adopter to make sure they are the best match for the pet that they are choosing. The process can be as quick as a few weeks or as long as a few months.
Can fosters adopt their foster animals?
-
Of course! Fosters have first pick on the animal that they are fostering. We also allow fosters to adopt any animal within our rescue. Typically, this process is quicker because the foster is already vetted through the rescue!
What happens if I need to return my adopted animal?
-
We will ALWAYS take back any animal adopted from our rescue. We prefer that you contact us first instead of taking the animal to a shelter. We ask that you give us a minimum of TWO WEEKS as a heads up so we can find a foster for the animal. Any adoption fee that was paid is NONREFUNDABLE.
Are the animals that you adopt out healthy?
-
Yes! If any animal in our rescue has known health issues, these will be disclosed prior to adoption and a health waiver will be issued. We require that any animal being adopted is up to date on vaccines, spayed or neutered, and in good health.
How old do you have to be to adopt from CSSAR?
-
We require applicants to be at least 21 Years Old in order to adopt from us.
Do you allow people to adopt an animal if they have not met them in person?
-
While the best adoptions are done in person, we realize that if we are adopting out of state, that may not be possible. This policy does vary based on the animal and temperament of the animal.
How long does it take for you to respond to an adoption application?
-
We respond to adoption applications in the order they are received. It usually takes us up to 48 hours to reply back.
Is there a trial adoption period?
-
Yes. Adult animals have a two week trial period to allow them to decompress and learn the routines in the new home. Puppies and kittens do not have trial periods.
Do I have to bring my current animals to meet the animal I am interested in adopting?
-
Yes! This rule does not apply to cats because most cats can be very stressed with change. If you have other dogs in the home, you must bring them to meet any potential dog you are interested in adopting. If you are out of state, this policy may be subject to change.
1
All of our animals available for adoption are posted on our website and Adoptapet.com. We update our website frequently with new animals! You must fill out an adoption application before meeting any of our animals. It typically takes us about 48 hours to go through applications. We try to give everyone a fair chance but ultimately, we will choose the application that we think is the best match for the animal.
2
Reference Check/Home Check/Interview
Before we reach out to a potential adopter, we will check references on the adoption application to make sure everything checks out. Once that is done, we will reach out via email to the potential adopter to set up a time for a phone interview. At that time, we may ask to schedule a day to do a home check, either in person or virtually.
3
Approved Applicants
We will approve an application for a specific pet once the reference check, home check, and interview process have been completed. At this time, we will schedule a time for you to meet the animal that you are interested in adopting. Everyone in the family must be in attendance. Any resident animals will also need to do a meet-and-greet with our adoptable animal to determine compatibility.
4
Completed Adoptions
At the time of adoption, all medical records, current food, medications, vaccinations, etc will be up to date and given to the new owner. The perspective owner will fill out the adoption contract. We will request that the non-refundable adoption fee be paid prior to the pet going to its adoptive home.
Animal Adoption Fees
Our adoption fees are determined by age, breed, type of animal, and desirability.

Charlotte Sheltered Souls Animal Rescue reserves the right to adjust these fees at any time, for any reason. Our adoption fee helps cover the cost of the animal's expenses while in our care.
